Post-doctoral positions on an insect-bacterial symbiosis
Two
post-doctoral positions are available in the laboratory of Angela Douglas at
The Sarkaria Institute of Insect Physiology & Toxicology, Cornell University, USA to research the
symbiosis between the pea aphid and its symbiotic bacteria Buchnera. This system offers
a fantastic opportunity for symbiosis research because the genomes of both
partners have been sequenced. The goal
is to develop and test predictions arising from recent genome annotation and
metabolic network reconstruction, specifically that the metabolism of host and
symbiont is tightly coupled such that function of each partner is inescapably
dependent on the other.
For the
first position, a background in computational methods is essential, and
knowledge of metabolic networks is an advantage.
For the second position, experience of genome analysis and
molecular biology is essential, and familiarity with nutritional
physiology/metabolite analysis, ideally in a symbiotic system, is preferred.
Interested candidates should send a letter of interest,
curriculum vitae, and contact information for at least two references to Angela
