Post-doctoral positions on an insect-bacterial symbiosis

Two post-doctoral positions are available in the laboratory of Angela Douglas at The Sarkaria Institute of Insect Physiology & Toxicology, Cornell University, USA to research the symbiosis between the pea aphid and its symbiotic bacteria Buchnera.  This system offers a fantastic opportunity for symbiosis research because the genomes of both partners have been sequenced.  The goal is to develop and test predictions arising from recent genome annotation and metabolic network reconstruction, specifically that the metabolism of host and symbiont is tightly coupled such that function of each partner is inescapably dependent on the other.

For the first position, a background in computational methods is essential, and knowledge of metabolic networks is an advantage.

For the second position, experience of genome analysis and molecular biology is essential, and familiarity with nutritional physiology/metabolite analysis, ideally in a symbiotic system, is preferred.

Interested candidates should send a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, and contact information for at least two references to Angela Douglas, aes326[at]cornell.edu (http://www.angeladouglaslab.com/). Informal email inquiries are welcome.

Postdoctoral Positions in Functional Analysis of Microbiome Physiology

Two postdoctoral positions are anticipated with start dates in early 2011 and 2012 at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, CT. This interdisciplinary project involves next-generation sequencing, metagenomics, metatranscript-omics, histology, fluorescent microscopy, SCFA analysis and microelectrodes. Experience in one of these areas is required. A doctoral degree in biology, microbiolgy or a related field is required by the start date.

This is an end date position, renewable annually depending on funding and performance. If interested, send a CV and the names of three references to Joerg Graf by e-mail at joerg.graf@uconn.edu. For more information about our research visit http://web2.uconn.edu/mcbstaff/graf/Graf.html. Screening will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. Applications from under-represented groups, including minorities, women, and people with disabilities are encouraged.
